Fire Station Trip

On Tuesday LS1 and LS2 went to the Panmure Fire Station. We learnt about Fire trucks and the different tools and mechanisms that they have (Ladders, pumps, hoses). The firefighters also demonstrated how they got someone out of a car if they are trapped inside of it (They used the glass cutters and spreaders to take apart the car). It was really cool and interesting watching them remove the windscreen without making it shatter. Everyone had a great time and had loads of fun.

Fire Station - Summary

On Tuesday, LS1 and LS2 went down to the Panmure Fire Station. Our inquiry for this term is our community so we have been learning about the different places in our community. After the trip, we came back to school and wrote a summary about our experience. First of all, we (I was working with Te Wai, Nazella and Shakaia) got twenty words that we thought were important, then we got six words from the first twenty words and used them to write a summary about firefighters.

What Is Tooth Decay?

Mrs Anderson has been educating us on oral hygiene and has taught us some interesting and disgusting vocabulary (Tarter, plaque, hygiene). Oral hygiene is very important and we had to come up with a fun and creative way to get our message across Panmure Bridge School. Our idea was to create an animation. Jeremiah and I (Jeremiah was my partner) created an animation because our audience we targeted was room 5. Room 5 has year 3's so that is why we did not use hard words or disgusting images. Our animation is based on what is tooth decay? Tooth decay is a huge problem that is why we targeted it. Tooth decay can be avoided if you reduce your sugar intake or just brush your teeth twice a day (For three minutes). We created this to pay it forward to the community to make sure that people are aware that they have to brush their teeth.

Police Helicopter Visit

Today we had a visit from a police helicopter (One of two in New Zealand) and a police dog with his handler. The whole school assembled outside to watch the helicopter land on the top field. The wind from the helicopter was so powerful that grass flew up through the windows in LS2. First of all, we walked around the helicopter and looked inside. After that, the pilots told us some facts and answered some of our questions. Once the helicopter flew off, a police dog came to visit us. He and his handler showed off how the dog tracks things. We learnt that the dogs can track people, drugs and explosives. After that, the police demonstrated how strong a police dogs teeth by getting the dog to bite a mans arm (He had padding on his arm). A big thanks to Constable Cyrus who organised this.

Reading - Navigating Narratives Feedback

Today we had a visitor who came in to have a look at what we have been doing during reading. We had the choice of choosing a reading method to show Mrs Cameron. (our visitors) So Jeremiah and I chose to show Mrs Cameron how we give each other feedback. To complete this DLO we read a book called Genesis by Bernard Beckett. We read the first chapter then we asked each other three questions. We then recorded ourselves asking and answering the questions.

Badminton

Today for Kiwi sport we had badminton. We have been practicing our forehand and our backhand grip. After having some practice, we did a rally. For the rally, we had to hit the badminton to our partner without it hitting the floor. My partner was Jeremiah and we did pretty well. We all had a lot of fun and I am looking forward to our next session of badminton.

Film Festival

Yesterday, the whole school went down to Hoyts Sylvia Park for the 10th annual Manaiakalani film festival. The films that were shown there were created by students from the schools in the Manaiakalani cluster. My favorite film was the one LS1 made. It was about two boys trying to survive in a school full of crazy people. When we got back to school, we went on some of the other schools videos and left some comments. All of the films were creative and I enjoyed watching them.

Screencastify - Maths Strategies

In LS2 we have been learning how to use screencastify to show our learning. Screencastify is a screen recorder that we use to show our learning. For this, we had to find a maths DLO and record ourselves talking about it. It took me a couple of attempts to finishing recording because everyone was recording and talking at the same time. I found screencastify a great tool because it's a new way to show my learning. Above the recording is a screenshot of my plan that I used in my screencastify.
