eBook Day

Read an eBook Day

Today is eBook day and to celebrate I read an eBook called A Feast Of Dragons. The book is about a boy called Thor who goes on a ship with other boys his age to a island training camp that is infested with dangerous creatures and is near a dragons home. Thor and his friends have to survive the island and the dangers it brings, not to mention the deadly dragon that is living nearby. We read our eBooks on the Tamaki College Overdrive. If you want to read your own eBook here is the link: Tamaki College Overdrive. #EBOOKLOVE

The Future

When I finish primary school and college, I hope to go to university although I have no idea at the moment what I would like to study. One of my hopes/dreams for the future is getting a job I would like to do. I know some people that have a job hate it, but they still turn up so they can earn some money. When I grow up I would like to be a aeroplane pilot or a navy sailor. I want to be a sailor because I love being out on the ocean, I enjoy ocean activities like sailing, kayaking and swimming and I never get seasick which is a added bonus. Being a pilot would be a bit harder as I'm kind of scared of heights, although I'm sure I could overcome that fear.

My Summer Holidays And The Summer Learning Journey Programme

In the summertime, I am usually on my computer playing games or doing the Summer Learning Journey. One of my favorite activities during summer is definitely doing the Summer Learning Journey. Most people probably think doing something that is similar to work during the holidays is boring but it can be interesting and you can learn lots of different things you can do during the school holidays. I have participated in the summer learning journey twice so far. I decided to participate in it because I had nothing to do so I was really bored. Once I finished the first activity, I decided to just keep on doing it. The two Summer Learning Journey programmes were about countries. In the first one, I chose the United Kingdom and I learnt about four countries that the United Kingdom is made up of (Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England). On the second Summer Learning Journey programme, I decided to choose Canada as my country. I learnt that, while most New Zealander's probably eat cereal for breakfast, Canadians enjoy eating pancakes and maple syrup. I really like doing the Summer Learning Journey programme as it's a great idea to help students to learn over the holidays.

My School

I go to Panmure Bridge school and my favorite thing about Panmure Bridge school is how we are a digital school. It's great how all of the seniors have chrome books and all of the juniors work on iPads to help them with their learning. Going to a school that is part of Manaiakalani is awesome because we can connect with many other students in our area by going on their blogs and commenting on their work. Some of the advantages of using chrome books to learn are being able to delete a mistake easily, being able to spell every work properly and the best thing about being able to use a device is that I can type faster than I would if I used a pen and some paper. I have two favorite subjects at school: Maths and PE. I like maths because it's really challenging and fun when I try to work out the hard questions we sometimes get given. I also like PE because sports is one of my favorite things to do during school time or after school. Some of my favorite sports are: soccer, rugby and touch.

An Introduction To Me

My name is Daniel and I live in Panmure, Auckland. There are five people in my family: my mum, my dad and my two brothers. Some of my likes are playing sports or playing games on my computer and some of my dislikes are drawing pictures because I'm horrible at drawing. One of my hobbies is camping which I always find fun. I've been to four different scout camps so far and I enjoyed every single one. Some thing my brothers and I do for fun are playing computer games together or playing sports or going on the trampoline outside.

Tamaki College Overdrive

After lunch today, LS2 went onto the Tamaki College overdrive which is basically a website with loads of different e-books on it. I looked around for a bit and chose a book called A Feast Of Dragons by Morgan Rice. It is the third book in the Sorcerers Ring series. I picked it because I'm currently reading the Sorcerers Ring series and I found the first two really interesting. It's about a boy called Thor who goes to a training place where he has to learn how to fight and defend himself. The overdrive is a great website because we don't have to go to the library to read some books and they have a great selection of books.

Writing - Two Word Sentences

For this week in writing, we have been learning about two word sentences. We came up with a list of two word sentences then used them to create a compound sentence and a complex sentence. The two word sentences I decided to use are: I'm sorry, stay inside and that's absurd.

Year 8 College Experience

On Friday, the year eights went to Tamaki College for the whole day to experience what it is like at a college. We had a couple of classes that would be like the classes we would have next year, in Year 9. After interval we had maths and science, and after lunch we had English and PE. Maths was run by Mr Jones, Science was run by Mr Stoddard, English was run by Mr Stevenson and PE was run by Mr Moyes. In Maths we played a game called battleships which is a game where you have to sink all of your opponents ships using co-ordinates. During our time in Science we did some experiments with electricity like making water bend by using a piece of rubber, that was weird how we made the water move in that way. After lunch we went to English where we had to memorize ten words and get some visual images for them. We ended our day with PE where we played a really fun game called turbo touch, which is kind of like touch, but it has different rules and a different setup. We all had an amazing and great time. A big thanks to Tamaki College for providing food (Which was yum!) and transport for us. It was a great day of learning that we all enjoyed.

Bully - Animation

Today in LS2 we have been talking about bullying. With Shannon, AJ and Oh Hsen, I created a animation on bullying. We did this because we are old enough to learn how to stick up for ourselves. If you see someone who is getting bullied, remember to help the victim or you will be as bad as the bully.

Why it's great to be me

It's great to be me because I have a caring and loving family that look after me. Today we have been learning about DARE. We created a DLO about why it's cool to be me. In it, we had to write down our goals. My goals are to become a qualified pilot when I am older and to have a successful life. After that, we made a word cloud with words about why it is great to be the age we are now.

Capitalisation

During writing today, we were learning about capitals. Our challenge was to fix these sentences by putting capitals where they should be. All of the letters in blue were what I changed, as they had lower case letters instead of capitals.

Rewindable Reading

Yesterday during reading, Lyndon, Te Wai, Harlem, AJ and I were getting taught how to do reciprocal reading by Fraidoon. While he taught us, we were recorded so that we could look at what we did well and what we need to work on. Today, we watched the video of ourselves so we could see what we did well and what we weren't doing as well. This type of learning is called rewindable learning.

Apostrophes

For writing today, we learned how to use apostrophes properly. There are two different ways to use them. If you are talking about one person, you write it like this: The shopkeeper's chocolate is amazing. If you are talking about more than one person, you write it like this: The doctors' performed surgery.

Maths

For maths this week, we have been learning how to divide fractions. I created this DLO with AJ. We learnt a new maths strategy that is called cross multiplication which we used to solve our problem.

Careers

For the past week, LS2 were looking at careers. We went onto a website (Careers NZ) and took a career quiz to see what job we would like to do. I decided to chose a pilot. They earn pretty good pay (Depending on how good/experienced they are) and it seems like a amazing job. Pilots also get a added bonus, some of them get to see different places around the world.

GEG Student Summit

Last Friday, Mrs Anderson took five students to the GEG (Google Education Group) student summit where students from schools all over Auckland presented some things that they learnt. Shannon, Jeremiah, Tiava, Lyndon and I went to present about our awesome animations. We taught some people how to create create characters, backgrounds and how to make a successful animation. We also went to other people's presentations (Robotics and Breakout) and we had a lot of fun there. In robotics, we learnt how to programme a robot and in Breakout we had to find clues to open a locked briefcase.

CARE Awards

This DLO is for my attitude CARE award. For the task, I had to research the role of the PHN (Public Health Nurse) in our school and tell others how they help us. The public health nurse in our school comes into our class every day to make sure that no one has a sore throat or a skin sore.

Samoan Language Week

This is a animation that I created with Shannon for Samoan Language week. We researched about the Samoan form of cricket (Kilikiti). It is kind of the same as normal cricket, with a few differences - like the size and shape of the bat.

Women's Suffrage Movement

In reading today I created a sketch-note about the women's suffrage movement from New Zealand. It was led by Kate Sheppard (Who is now on the New Zealand 10 dollar note) around one hundred years ago. I worked with AJ, Te Wai and Lyndon to get the information to create this DLO.

Dance

Today, LS2 has been doing rewindable learning with our dance. We were practicing our dances for our school production. We got split into three groups. My group is doing the song Stayin' Alive and the other two groups are doing I See Red and Footloose. Yesterday, Zoe (The dance teacher) taught us the moves to our songs and because Mrs Anderson took a video of us, we watched ourselves doing the dance so if we made mistakes (Which we definitely did) we could work on it the next time we practice dancing. Thanks to watching ourselves so we could fix our mistakes, my group (Which are doing Stayin' Alive) has definitely improved a lot.

Kate Sheppard DLO

For reading today, I created a DLO about Kate Sheppard with Te Wai, AJ and Lyndon. Kate Sheppard was the leader of the women's suffrage movement in New Zealand. We had to find out about who she was, what she did, why she is famous and some of her personality qualities.

Women's Suffrage Movement Summary

In reading we have been looking at the women's suffrage movement in New Zealand which was led by Kate Sheppard over 100 years ago. Our task was to write a 25 word summary about what the suffrage movement was about. To finish this task my group and I had to work collaboratively, talk with each other and ask questions. We learnt that Kate Sheppard and the rest of the women that were apart of the suffrage movement had a huge impact on the way New Zealand is today.

Winter Learning Journey

Over the holidays, there was a competition called the Winter Learning Journey. The topic was the great Kiwi road trip. In it, you could learn about many different places in New Zealand. It was created so that Rachel, the person who created the competition came to Panmure Bridge school today to hand out the prizes. Lots of students got a certificate for participating in it and six students got top prizes for coming 1st, 2nd or 3rd (Two students came tie for each place). Oh Hsen and I came first, Alex and AJ came second and Eric and Ofa came third. All six students that won a prize were boys but Nazella also got a prize for being the girl who did the best. A big thanks to Rachel and her team for creating the winter learning journey which was a great opportunity to learn and have fun over the holidays.

Maths

Today for maths, I created a DLO about my learning. First, we had to figure out three problems, and then we had to put the third one on a DLO. It was kind of hard as first we had to figure how much money Sione gets in the first season and then, in the second season, the amount of money he gets changes which complicated things.

Writing

Today, I finished a writing task about hyperboles. Hyperbole is a extreme exaggerated statement or claim which aren't meant to be taken seriously. We had to write a short story about our unfortunate walk home. In our story, we had to include five examples of hyperbole.

Ordering Fractions

Today for maths, we played a warm up game about ordering fractions. After that, we did a test about ordering fractions which was slightly harder than the warm up game. I managed to get 100% (Four correct out of four) which was great.

Why is it so important to keep oral story telling alive?

AJ and I created a 25 word summary to answer the question: Why is it so important to keep oral story telling alive? For this task, we had to listen to some videos that gave some answers to the question. The videos were in Te Reo so we had to use subtitles. We had to work collaboratively with our partners to complete this task. Our summary is 26 words, because it sounded better that way.

It’s important to teach younger generations about Maori storytelling to remember the past. It keeps the cultural and traditional stories alive so they won’t be forgotten.

Exploring Myths and Legends

I created a comic strip using a website called Storyboard that to practice using dialogue to show rather than tell what is happening or happened in a scene from the myth 'How Maui brought fire to the world'. I found it challenging to make sure that I used show and not tell, in my comic about Maui. Another thing I found challenging was finding where the characters and where the background/setting is because this was my first time using the site.

Maths

For maths today, we played a game called Ordering Fractions Game. In the game, (As you probably guessed) you had to order fractions. It is a very fun game and it helps you improve your ordering fractions skills. If you want to play it, here is the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/game/ma17frac-game-ordering-fractions

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity, I had to write a description about this week (What have I learned, what did I like about the trip, etc).
What I learnt: I have learnt a lot about New Zealand during these past 7 days of activity's. I learnt that there are many different beautiful places all around New Zealand, and they can be kept that way if people put things like their rubbish in the right place.
What I liked: I liked how we visited many different places. Taupo, Karekare beach - the list just goes on and on.  I had a great time going on a amazing kiwi road trip!
What I didn't like: I liked everything!

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity, I have to take a picture of myself doing something that I find relaxing. I find reading really relaxing so I decided to take a picture of myself reading. The book I was reading is called John Paul Jones who was a man who fought in the American navy.

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity, I am walking around Taupo and I notice there is rubbish in the lake and on the footpath. I have to use my imagination and come up with three things I could do to make my neighborhood more beautiful.
1. If I see rubbish on the floor, I would pick it up
2. Talk to as many people as I can to try and persuade then to not litter
3. Put up a couple of signs saying use bins or don't litter

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity, I have to watch three videos of the All Blacks doing the haka and rate them from 1 (The best) to 3 (The worst).
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYmszJ00aMM (All Blacks v Argentina)
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiKFYTFJ_kw (All Blacks v France)
3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z60PGuxnHmw (All Blacks v South Africa)

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity, I have to read about the Matariki Festival at Te Papa and choose three events to write about. These are the three events I picked:
1. Matariki Dawn: Special opening weekend at space place
2. Lantern making with artist Yvonne de Mille
3. Guided tour through the great war exhibition

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity I have to imagine I was one of the people on the first waka that landed at a place called Shag Point. I have to write a poem about how I would feel. I decided to write a acrostic poem.

Scared
Hearty
Alarmed
Great

Possibly threatening
Observant
Interested
Nervous
Tense

Winter Learning Journey

For this activity, I have to say whether or not I would ride the Otago central rail trail (150km long cycle trail). I would defiantly ride it on my bike because I love riding my bike around and I haven't been biking for a long time recently. 150km sounds like a lot but I reckon I could do it.

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity, I had to research a famous New Zealander. I chose Peter Jackson because I love his Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings trilogy's.

Winter Learning Journey

For this activity in the winter learning journey, I have to pretend that I got lost in a forest all by myself. I have to write a short story (8-10 sentences) about what might happen next.

It was a wonderful day, with the sun shining and the birds chirping. I strolled along the forest floor, dazed by the forest’s natural beauty. Suddenly, I realized the I couldn’t hear my companions footsteps, talk or endless laughter. I was lost! I wandered around for ages, shouting at the top of my lungs, hoping that they might hear me. My only water bottle lay in my bag, dry as a bone. Soon, the heat began to kick in. My lips were cracked and dry and my throat was sore. After a while, I just gave up on looking for my friends and lay down. Soon, sleep came. In the morning, I didn’t really feel like walking, so I just sat on the forest floor. After a couple of hours, I heard a peculiar noise. It was a helicopter. As quick as I could, I climbed the tallest tree around me and when I saw the helicopter I waved my arms frantically. Someone in the helicopter let down a piece of rope and I grabbed it and climbed up inside.

Winter Learning Journey

Hector’s dolphins are only found in New Zealand waters. Sadly, many of them are getting killed each year because they are getting killed accidentally by fishers). I have to form an opinion on where I think fishing should be banned in Farewell spit (Where hector’s dolphins are found). I think it should be banned because people could fish in other places where the dolphins aren’t found. The dolphins could become extinct if people keep killing them.

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey task, I have to watch two trailers of a movie called Whale Rider. I then have to write a summary of the movie and rate it out of five. The movie is about a girl whose twin brother was supposed to be the next chief in their tribe. However, the boy dies when he is born and his sister survives. Only males are allowed to become a chief so the custom is changed when the brother dies, and the sister survives. I give this movie a 3 out of 5 because it doesn’t really seem like a movie i’d want to watch

Winter Learning Journey

For this activity, I had to read about a place called Farewell Spit. It was in the news recently where some whales accidentally swam into the spit and got stuck on the beach. They couldn’t swim back out to the sea because the water they were in was to shallow. The local people tried to save them, but sadly many of them died. I have to describe what the local people did to try and save the whales. The locals did these things:

  • Pour buckets of water on the whales
  • Put wet towels/cloths on the whales
  • They also filled bowls, chilly bins, water bottles, pots with water and poured the water over the beached whales

Winter Learning Journey

For this activity in the winter learning journey I had to read about how people in New Zealand are working to kill pests like possums, form a opinion and give three reasons why I think that way. I agree with the New Zealanders who are killing these pests and I think all the pests should be killed because:

  1. The pests damage native trees
  2. The pests could be killing New Zealand native animals like the kokako (By eating their eggs/chicks)
  3. Possums are also a hazard for farms, costing them around $35 million every yeat

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity, I had to go to a website and chose a animal I would like to adopt. I would like to adopt the great spotted kiwi. Here are some facts about the great spotted kiwi:
Diet: Earthworms, grubs, beetles, crickets, flies
Habitat: Three places in the South Island (Northwestern Nelson, North Westland and in the Southern Alps, near Lake Rotoiti)
Type of animal: Mammal

Threats/predators: Dogs, cats, ferrets, stoats
