Summer Learning Journey W1 D2 A1

For this summer learning journey activity, the task was to: On your blog, compare the wharepuni to your own home. What are two similarities and two differences between a wharepuni and your house?

Similarities:
  • They both have (the wharepuni and my house) a roof, walls, a door and windows
Differences:
  • The wharepuni has carvings and my house doesn't
  • The wharepuni's roof is really low

Summer Learning Journey W1 D1 A1

For the first summer learning journey activity, the task was to:

Follow this link to read a short story about a famous man in Māori mythology – Maui. On your blog, post three facts that you learned about this interesting man. What other stories have you heard about Maui?

Facts:
1. Maui said a old Karakia while making his fishing line, so that it gave the line strength
2. His hook was made out of a jawbone
3. Maui's giant fish became the North Island and the canoe became the South Island

PBS Blogging Journey

For this PBS Blogging Journey activity, the task was to create a DLO providing facts about the Auckland Harbour Bridge. I learnt that it took a long time to build (4 Years!!!) and it actually had two architects that designed it.

PBS Blogging Journey

For this PBS Blogging Journey activity, the task is to: Visit the museum website and find out about life as an ANZAC soldier. Find three interesting facts and say why you found them interesting.
Fact 1: Archduke Franz Ferdinand's death started WW1. I found this interesting because if he hadn't have been assassinated, the war would never have started.
Fact 2: WW1 ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. I found that interesting because a very bloody war ended on a very weird date.
Fact 3: In WW1, when the ANZAC's left, they had to put sandbags on their shoes so that the enemy wouldn't hear them. I found this interesting because it was a very smart idea that might have saved lives.

For this PBS Blogging Journey Activity, the task was to: Visit the Kelly Tarlton's website to find out how much it would cost for you to go there. Use your smart searching skills to find out much it would cost for your family to visit the aquarium. It would cost me $22 if I pay online or $27 if I pay when I get there. It would cost my family $127 if we pay online (Family B ticket + Child ticket) or $159 if we pay when I get there.

For this PBS blogging journey activity, our task was to: Use our smart searching skills to find out five facts about the Auckland Sky Tower and create a DLO about it. I learnt that the Sky Tower cost 76 million dollars to create which seems really expensive.

PBS Blogging Journey

For this activity, I had to use google maps to locate Rainbow's end, find out how much it costs for a family pass and I had to find out how much it would cost for my family to go. I find it weird how if you buy tickets online, you get them for a cheaper price than buying it at the gate.

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity, I am walking around Taupo and I notice there is rubbish in the lake and on the footpath. I have to use my imagination and come up with three things I could do to make my neighborhood more beautiful.
1. If I see rubbish on the floor, I would pick it up
2. Talk to as many people as I can to try and persuade then to not litter
3. Put up a couple of signs saying use bins or don't litter

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity I have to imagine I was one of the people on the first waka that landed at a place called Shag Point. I have to write a poem about how I would feel. I decided to write a acrostic poem.

Scared
Hearty
Alarmed
Great

Possibly threatening
Observant
Interested
Nervous
Tense

Winter Learning Journey

For this activity in the winter learning journey, I have to pretend that I got lost in a forest all by myself. I have to write a short story (8-10 sentences) about what might happen next.

It was a wonderful day, with the sun shining and the birds chirping. I strolled along the forest floor, dazed by the forest’s natural beauty. Suddenly, I realized the I couldn’t hear my companions footsteps, talk or endless laughter. I was lost! I wandered around for ages, shouting at the top of my lungs, hoping that they might hear me. My only water bottle lay in my bag, dry as a bone. Soon, the heat began to kick in. My lips were cracked and dry and my throat was sore. After a while, I just gave up on looking for my friends and lay down. Soon, sleep came. In the morning, I didn’t really feel like walking, so I just sat on the forest floor. After a couple of hours, I heard a peculiar noise. It was a helicopter. As quick as I could, I climbed the tallest tree around me and when I saw the helicopter I waved my arms frantically. Someone in the helicopter let down a piece of rope and I grabbed it and climbed up inside.

Winter Learning Journey

For this activity, I had to read about a place called Farewell Spit. It was in the news recently where some whales accidentally swam into the spit and got stuck on the beach. They couldn’t swim back out to the sea because the water they were in was to shallow. The local people tried to save them, but sadly many of them died. I have to describe what the local people did to try and save the whales. The locals did these things:

  • Pour buckets of water on the whales
  • Put wet towels/cloths on the whales
  • They also filled bowls, chilly bins, water bottles, pots with water and poured the water over the beached whales

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter learning journey activity, I had to go to a website and chose a animal I would like to adopt. I would like to adopt the great spotted kiwi. Here are some facts about the great spotted kiwi:
Diet: Earthworms, grubs, beetles, crickets, flies
Habitat: Three places in the South Island (Northwestern Nelson, North Westland and in the Southern Alps, near Lake Rotoiti)
Type of animal: Mammal

Threats/predators: Dogs, cats, ferrets, stoats

Winter Learning Journey

For the first activity on the second day of the winter learning journey, I went to rangitoto island, karekare beach and tane mahuta. I had to read about the three places and say which place I most enjoyed visiting and why. I enjoyed visiting Karekare beach the most because it is one of Auckland’s most spectacular beaches and wilderness areas.

Winter Learning Journey

For the first activity of the winter learning journey, I had to go to the Tourism New Zealand site and choose three facts about the people of New Zealand. Here are my three facts:
  1. Almost 7/10 (69%) of New Zealanders are of European descent
  2. Rugby is New Zealand’s national sport (Being the most popular sport in NZ and having a great rugby team)
  3. There are 4 main cities in New Zealand (Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton and Christchurch) with 1/3 of the population living in Auckland.

Summer Learning Journey

For this summer learning journey activity, I have to imagine that I just arrived back at the airport and my whole family is there to greet me. For the special meal I would ask for fish and chips with pavlova for dessert (Like a typical kiwi).

Summer Learning Journey

For this activity, I have to imagine that I was visiting a neighbouring town that was 30 kilometers away. There are a number of beautiful villages and interesting things to see along the way. I have four options for the trip:
1. Train – 25 minute ride; No stops along the way; $12 for the trip (return)
2. Bus – 45 minute ride; Two stops along the way to look at interesting villages; $8 for the trip (return)
3. Scooter – 1 hour ride; Unlimited number of stops; $5 for the trip (return)
4. Bicycle – 2 hour ride; Unlimited number of stops but there are some hills along the way; $1 (return)
I would chose to take the scooter because it doesn't cost as much as the train and bus, it is quicker than the bicycle and it has a unlimited number of stops.

Summer Learning Journey

For this activity, I have to imagine that I just entered the zoo and I have to write about what I saw on my visit.
I had just entered the zoo when, all of a sudden, I saw I huge snake lunging towards me. It was green and camouflaged really well into the leaves and moss. Luckily, it was behind a wall of glass. As I ventured further into the zoo, I saw animals of different shapes and sizes. There were lions, bats, monkeys and much more. I saw a man feeding a crocodile and a woman feeding a shark. I learnt loads of things about different animals. There were lots of dangerous animals but they didn't hurt anyone.

Summer Learning Journey

For this summer learning journey activity, I have to write about which of the icons I would like to visit in my chosen country (My chosen country is Canada). I would like to visit the Niagara falls because they it is the largest waterfall in the world.

Summer Learning Journey

For this summer learning journey activity I have to imagine that I am visiting the country that I chose on their national holiday. I would eat poutine (Fires with gravy and cheese) and I would set off some fireworks like  most people do in Canada during Canada day.

Summer Learning Journey

For this activity, I have to say what I think about this painting and who I would give it to. I like this painting because it has a mix of different colors and looks very creative. I would give this to my brother because he likes drawing and this is something he would like.
