Summer Learning Journey

For this activity, I have to find two indigenous animals. That means that they are originally from your country. The two indigenous animals that I picked are the Canada Lynx and the Bighorn Sheep.
Canada Lynx:
Diet - Show Shoe Hares
Habitat - Forests of Canada

Bighorn Sheep:
Diet - Grass (In Summer) and Willow (In Winter)
Habitat - Mountains In South Canada

  1. Hi Daniel,

You've chosen two iconic animals from Canada. They are large mammals that are rarely seen outside of the northern and/or prairie regions of Canada. I have not actually seen either the lynx or the sheep in real life, however, I did come face-to-face with a mountain goat when I was driving through the Canadian Rocky Mountains last October. I had gone home to visit and I was driving from Vancouver to Regina, Saskatchewan with my partner, Andy, when a huge mountain goat came up over the crest of a hill and almost ran directly into our car. It was pretty scary!

Fortunately, the goat stopped short of our car and I was able to drive away safely. Whew, it was a close call. Have you ever had a close call with an animal while out and about? (I hope not, for your sake!)

    Cheers,
    Rachel ;)

  2. Hi Daniel,

It's so nice to see your choice of animals, representing Canada. I've never seen a lynx in the wild, fortunately, because they are hunters and not always man's best friend. But they're beautiful, powerful animals, and they do live in the forests near our home.

I've been out west in Canada, in our mountains, but I've only seen mountain goats from a distance. They are amazing animals!! They manage to climb up very very steep mountains with great skill - I don't know how it is that they don't fall off, especially when snow blizzards are swirling around them. Amazing!

Thank you for being interested in Canada! I hope you've enjoyed studying about our country!

    Leslie
